COLD weather payments will be paid to thousands of people in Huddersfield.

The announcement by the Department for Work and Pensions today follows the low temperatures recorded last week.

People in the areas affected do not need to make a claim for the £8.50 payment as it will be paid automatically to those who qualify.

The cold weather payments are additional to the winter fuel payments of £200 for the over-60s.

Payments are triggered when the daily temperature is, or is forecast to be, at or below 0°C, for seven consecutive days.

The areas affected cover postcodes HD1 through to HD9.

Payments are made to people on pension credit, income support or income-based jobseekers' allowance during the seven-day period from February 22 to February 28.

In addition, to qualify you must either:

* Have to have a child aged under five

* Be or have a partner aged 60 or over and receive a pensioner premium

* Receive a disability premium or have a partner or child receiving one.

Only one payment is made per household.
