CARETAKERS at Huddersfield Technical College have started an indefinite strike over cash today.

The 17 staff are demanding an extra £40 a week - which they say would bring them into line with council-employed caretakers.

Unison branch secretary Paul Holmes said morale among the workers were strong. He added: "They will be out there come hell or high water.

"They put in a claim in August last year and it was only yesterday that they were offered a deal next April. That's not good enough. Some cleaners have refused to cross the picket."

A spokesman for the college said it would stay open during the strike. He said the college had tried to resolve the dispute by telling caretakers their pay would be reviewed as part of the college's job evaluation scheme.
