A COLLEGE chief has quit because cash promised for expansion has not materialised.

Jim McWilliams said he was resigning as principal of Leeds College of Technology because he could no longer make the books balance.

Mr McWilliams spoke out as fellow further education representatives were lobbying Parliament for more money.

The extra funding promised to Leeds College last year simply had not materialised and the staff had already been cut by 40, he said.

"I feel a bit disillusioned in so much as the Government does not seem to appreciate the investment that is required," he said.

Minister Ivan Lewis said the FE sector was currently enjoying its largest ever investment with an extra £1bn over three years.

He said: "Further education is at the centre of achieving the skills performance that we need for the future of our economy."
