STUDENTS from Huddersfield New College are off to Kosovo to help children in the war-torn country rebuild their lives.

War ended in Kosovo in 1999 and left the country's infrastructure devastated.

The Kosovan people are rebuilding the country, but the conflict left many women without husbands and children without fathers.

The New College students hope to bring some fun to the lives of some of these children, living in the city of Jakova.

The students will travel to Jakova in July with sixth-form students from St Christopher's School in Letchworth, Hertfordshire.

They will spend 10 days in the city, working with Kosovan sixth-form students to provide fun activities for children aged seven to 13 who have lost one or both parents.

The activities will include drama, dance, arts and crafts, sport and English lessons.

The sixth-formers will live for 10 days in a boarding facility used during the week by Jakova sixth- formers who live a long way from their school.

They will cook for themselves and the children, who come for activities between 10am and 4pm each day.

Liz Heywood, a New College performing arts teacher, is co-ordinating the project.

She said the aim was to make sure the activities can continue after the students leave.

To help this happen, students are planning to leave books, computers, medicines and other equipment in Jakova.

Mrs Heywood said the trip would also establish links between Kosovan and British young people.

She said: "The aim is to make these activities as sustainable as possible.

"We hope to develop an ongoing and fruitful relationship between Kosovan and UK young people."
