A HUDDERSFIELD student is hoping to net the title of GCSE student of the year.

Collette Brydon, of Edgerton, has received a national award to mark her being one of the 17 top-performing students across the country.

And the former Huddersfield Grammar School pupil, who now goes to Greenhead College, could also be named the best in the country in the awards scheme, which is organised by the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance and the Letts Educational company.

This summer Collette, a keen netball player, achieved the best mark from more than 52,000 who took PE at GCSE level in the UK.

And she also bagged 10 other A-star grades.

Collette is studying four A-levels - economics, French, biology and chemistry - but also has an active social life.

She said: "I'm very interested in music, especially going to gigs and festivals. And I like to play netball when I can.

"I would like to go to university and travel the world while doing charity work."

Seventeen awards will be presented at The Brewery, Chiswell Street, London.

Each successful student will receive a solid silver medal and a diploma.

The GCSE Student of the Year will receive a gold medal, a personal diploma to mark the occasion and a cheque for £250.
