YOUNG people need more sporting opportunities to improve their health, a councillor has said.

Clr Nicola Turner wants more Government money to encourage fitness.

The Colne Valley Lib Dem said: “If young people want to play sport then councils should help by providing sustainable facilities. If people want to access the beautiful Yorkshire countryside then councils must maintain our rights of way.

“If central Government wants people to live longer lives then it must make money available to councils.”

Clr Turner added that Yorkshire’s health statistics made depressing reading.

She said: “Why is the health of Yorkshire children among the worst in England? Why is acute asthma and childhood anaemia so much higher here?

“It is no longer acceptable to see health statistics that read as though they have been produced in a report on an emerging country.”
