Families need help when it comes to fuel prices.

That was the message from Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney as he and other Conservative MPs mounted a campaign against a rise in fuel duty.

They are lobbying Chancellor George Osborne not to impose a price hike in next week’s Budget.

Mr McCartney chairs the All-Party Fair Fuel group and he will lead a delegation meeting a Treasury minister.

Mr McCartney said he was very concerned and would be urging colleagues to lobby Treasury ministers and officials and is to email every MP warning a rise is rumoured and seeking their opinions.

“We’ll be mobilising all the supporters of the Fair Fuel group in Parliament this week,” he said.

He added: “I’m speaking up for the families in our area who rely on transport. For many of them, getting into a car is a necessity not a luxury.

“There are all sorts of rumours about what may happen in the Budget and we want to make sure fuel duty does not rise.

“I want to make sure the Treasury thinks very carefully about the impact of fuel prices. We have had relatively low prices for a while but they could soar again within months”.

Treasury minister Damian Hinds is to meet Mr McCartney and representatives from the Fair Fuel UK Campaign at noon on Tuesday.
