FORCED marriages could be outlawed.
Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney this week welcomed a new Home Office consultation on the issue.
The Conservative said: “I am glad this Government is examining how we can criminalise forced marriage while ensuring we do not discourage victims from coming forward.
“We need to completely eradicate this unacceptable crime which rightly appalls people across my Colne Valley constituency.
“I fully support the tough stance of David Cameron and Theresa May against forced marriage.”
Although many cases go unreported, the Government’s Forced Marriage Unit gave advice to 1,735 people last year.
During 2010 the youngest victim of forced marriage was just 12 and the oldest was 73.
