VOLUNTEERS at a Golcar museum hope graffiti ‘signatures’ will identify vandals who have targeted the premises.

Colne Valley Museum in Cliffe Ash is currently undergoing renovation work.

Volunteers who run the museum are completing work to incorporate a former fish and chip shop next door.

On Wednesday night vandals attacked wet concrete at the back, scrawling their initials and other symbols.

Museum treasurer John Daker said: “While it hasn’t caused massive damage, it is just annoying and shows what is happening in the village.

“We are trying to improve the museum and some kids come along and do this.”

The concrete was needed to prevent water seeping into the buildings and vandals forced their way underneath barriers which have since been fastened down.

Mr Daker added: “We have now skimmed over the concrete and the damage is barely noticeable.

“But we have taken photographs for the police and we hope that anyone who recognises the initials or the style of handwriting to contact police.

“It’s just wanton vandalism and it has to be stopped.”

The museum bought the chip shop and a cottage in 2008 and secured a £50,000 Lottery grant for renovations.

So far the museum has spent almost £100,000.
