A rich and varied line-up will put the spotlight firmly on black history at a major celebration finale in Huddersfield.

Major international figures and experts are joining with local talent in the all-day showcase which will culminate in a vivid carnival parade.

The Black History Month celebration is set for the Hudawi Cultural Centre and will feature renowned speakers as well as music, games and Caribbean food.

It is nearly 30 years since Black History Month was first held in the UK and the event on October 31 is the local finale.

Among those taking the stage will be Denis St Bernard, international business development consultant, entrepreneur, and freelance journalist and founder of Priority Group International, a Caribbean-based business support and facilitation services group.

He will share his vision of how to create a sustainable and internationally dynamic black business sector for the 21st century.

Onyeka, author of Blackamoores: Africans in Tudor England, their Presence, Status and Origins, profiles a major study of Britain’s long cultural history of diversity.

He questions: “Do we imagine English history as a book with white pages and no black letters in?”

Another scholar, author Emily Zobel Marshall will share thoughts on Caribbean carnival history.

Musicians include Birmingham-based reggae star Glama Wayne and Nereus Joseph.

Natalie Pinock-Hamilton, MBE and member of the Celebration Showcase Group said: “ We believe the annual celebration at the Hudawi Cultural Centre is a really important window on the life and achievements of Huddersfield’s black community.”

Heather Norris Nicholson, locally-based cultural historian said: “It’s a chance to take time to learn more and to enjoy some of the African and Caribbean influences that have contributed so much to Huddersfield over the past 60 years and to Britain’s longer history.”

Activities include local poets, singers, dancers, and a display of carnival costumes. There will be a domino tournament as well as a health and well-being session. Yoga, relaxation and health empowerment sessions will run, and Caribbean food will be available.

The Black History Month showcase will be at the Hudawi Cultural Centre in Great Northern Street, Huddersfield, on Saturday October 31. Admission and limited car-parking is free for all daytime events.

Afternoon events take place between 1pm and 4pm. The evening session starts with a parade of carnival troupes and costumes at 6pm, followed by the speakers. The event ends around 11pm.
