A Kirklees paint maker brought a splash of colour to Birstall with a family open day. SigmaKalon put on Saturday's event as a thank-you to the 1,000 staff employed at the Birstall site and in nearby Morley. The event included a fun fair, barbecue and calypso band, a nature corner, stilt walkers, face painters and entertainers. A new mural was unveiled and local historians in period costume related the story of The Rydings, a listed building at the Birstall site, which was the home of Ellen Nussey, best friend of Charlotte Bronte.
