Kirklees Council joined “history in the making” to mark Commonwealth Day.

Local authorities, civic dignitaries, community groups and charities took part in flag raising events and dedication ceremonies throughout the UK for the first time to mark the occasion.

The Kirklees ceremony was held at Crowlees J&I School, Mirfield, when Mayor Clr Martyn Bolt read the Commonwealth affirmation and children raised the flag. Commonwealth flags were also raised at all four Kirklees town halls. A message from the Queen was read out by David Pearson, a Deputy Lieutenant for West Yorkshire. Clr Bolt said: “I am proud to take part in this event which will help emphasise that Kirklees is part of the family of 53 countries which make up the Commonwealth and that this provides opportunities to all as well as a commitment to maintain its values.”
