Almost £10,000 is now available for community groups.

Voluntary organisations based in Kirklees can apply for funding from the Comic Relief Local Communities Grant Programme which has £9,754 to distribute in this area.

All applications will be assessed and some awarded funding by One Community, the community foundation for Kirklees and the partner for Comic Relief locally.

Previous groups which have benefited from funding have included Brockholes-based Design & Manufacture for Disability who were awarded a grant of £6,000 to design a wheelchair bike for Dewsbury-based group Streetbikes.

This round of Comic Relief funding is now open to new applications, aiming to empower local people, enabling them to create lasting change in their communities.

Priority for the funding will be given to small, locally-based groups in disadvantaged areas whose projects show a clear understanding of the needs in their community.

A Local Communities grant must be at least 30% of the total cost of the project. The funding will support both sports and non sports projects.

Paul Johnson, from One Community, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for a local organisation to obtain some substantial funding from Comic Relief, which would really help to drive their group or project forward.
