COMMUNITY projects around Kirklees have been recognised for bringing people together.

Colne Valley's Our Car Your Car club, Kirkburton's Burton Bulletin, Marsden Cuckoo Day, Slaithwaite Moonraking and Shelley's Over 60s Bus were all highly commended at the Yorkshire Rural Community Council's Village Ventures Awards.

Ian Strong, chief executive of the Council, commented: "This year's award winners show what rural communities can and do achieve.

"The standard of the entries has been very high and there are wonderful examples of community action in the villages of South and West Yorkshire."

Our Car Your Car gives members access to a range of vehicles for relatively low rates, taking care of tax, insurance and maintenance.

Launched in spring this year, it is Northern England's first rural car club.

Kirkburton's Burton Bulletin is a quarterly newsletter.

Marsden Cuckoo Day and the Slaithwaite Moonraking procession are both tongue-in-cheek celebrations based on local legends.

The Cuckoo Day is in its 11th year and the Moonraking festival in its 19th.
