A FORMER hotel could be turned into flats and homes.

Huddersfield-based Lanson Homes bought the Springfield Park Hotel complex in Penistone Road, Kirkburton, when it closed in June.

Lanson, who also developed The Melting Point flats in Firth Street, Huddersfield, is looking to spend £9.5m on Springfield Park.

Previous owners Nowell Hotels closed the complex, which included 47 en suite bathrooms, a restaurant and function rooms, because they said it was no longer profitable. More than 30 staff lost their jobs.

Edgerton-based Lanson hopes Kirklees Council's planning committee will agree to the development, which includes 30 one-bedroom flats, eight two- bedroom flats and 13 three-storey town houses.

Prices start at £89,950.

Lanson sales and marketing manager Richard Brown said the flats would be ideal for first-time buyers struggling to get on to the property market.

"We have undergone extensive local research, which highlighted a lack of reasonably priced, modern housing in the area," he said.

"The development has been specially designed to offer luxury contemporary living at a price that first-time buyers can afford.

"We hope the local authority agree it will be a major benefit to the area."

The flats will include the flexible living concept, which means some internal walls can be moved to alter spaces.

A similar project has proved successful at Equilibrium, the old Wellington Mills, in Oakes, which is another Lanson Homes development.

The Springfield Park plans will go before councillors next month.
