YORKSHIRE Water has started an online campaign to combat bogus callers pretending to be from the water company.

The firm says such scams account for more than half of doorstep deceptions.

Yorkshire Water has launched a video guide on what to do when a stranger comes calling.

The guide narrated by Kevin Carroll, the ‘voice of Yorkshire Water, explains a simple ‘stop, chain and check’ process.

The video, downloadable from www.yorkshire water.com, advises setting up a password only Yorkshire Water will know.

A door hanger with similar advice is available by calling 0845 1220572.

The company adds that its employees have been given new silver and navy blue uniforms to replace the old sweatshirts, T-shirts and polo shirts.

Yorkshire Water communications manager Jane Herbert said: “We rarely call without an appointment, but if customers have any doubt whatsoever they should always ring 0800 1 38 78 78 and check if the call is genuine.”
