A HUDDERSFIELD man is facing the daunting task of coaching 100 schoolchildren to perform in front of world stars of classical music.

Composer Hugh Nankivell has been teaching pupils to write songs for the start of an international festival.

The youngsters, from four Leeds schools, perform them tomorrow at the opening reception for the Leeds Lieder+ festival at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Listening to the children will be top soprano Barbara Bonney and tenor Andrew Kennedy, who regularly performs at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Mr Nankivell, of Sunnybank Road, Edgerton, said: "The youngsters are very excited at the prospect of performing. It's been great fun helping."

The composer has just finished writing an opera, which will be performed in Japan next year.

Mr Nankivell also works with the Royal Opera House, Opera North and the Halle Orchestra.
