POLICE have defended a major training exercise in Huddersfield which involved simulated gunfire.
There have been complaints from residents near the St Luke’s Hospital site at Crosland Moor that they were not told of the exercise, on Wednesday morning.
Several contacted police after seeing the West Yorkshire helicopter hovering over the site and hearing gunfire.
One resident, Shaun Winterbottom, of College Street, said: “I am furious.
“I rang 999 when I heard shots and the operator kept me on the line for a long time, asking how many shots there were and asking if I could see anything.
“He did not seem to know it was a training exercise and it was a very scary morning”.
A police spokesman said: “We did attempt to inform the vast majority of people in the local area prior to this training exercise taking place so that they were aware in advance.
“Local officers who were not part of the exercise were also on patrol to provide reassurance to any concerned residents on the day”.
