A BABY boy hurt in a police car smash is still in a serious condition but his health is improving, police have said.

Little Sahil Saleem was one of seven people injured in a crash involving his family’s BMW and a police car responding to an emergency call.

The nine-month-old had to have emergency head surgery at Leeds General Infirmary following the incident in Birkby on Friday night.

Yesterday, a West Yorkshire Police spokesman said Sahil was still in a “serious” condition, but his health was “improving”.

His mother Hajra was also detained in hospital after the collision at the junction of Grimscar Avenue and Birkby Hall Avenue.

Sahil’s twin brother Hashim, older brother Harris, seven, and father Irfan were released from hospital following treatment.

The two police officers involved were treated for minor injuries.

Now major inquiries into the accident are underway.

One is being conducted by West Yorkshire Police while the other is in the hands of the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
