THOUSANDS of pounds worth of plant machinery have been stolen in Kirklees in the last few weeks.

Four diggers, a dumper truck and a tractor have gone missing since the start of month.

It can be a costly crime for the victims, but there are steps owners can take to reduce the risk:

Remove ignition keys when plant is unattended and do not leave them under the seat.

Make sure that plant cannot be started when it is not in use.

Use all security devices supplied with the plant to secure it overnight, especially if it is being left on the road or in the street.

Extra security should be used when leaving machinery on the street – locks, wheel clamps and high-security chains.

Cut off the electricity supply to equipment that could be used to help somebody steal other plant.

Make sure that all small tools and equipment are stored in high-security cabinets or enclosures.

Display security posters on site to show the company’s commitment to preventing crime.

Regularly review security measures on site and how each item is secured.

Theft and vandalism can lead to job losses.

If your equipment is on-site, make sure it is in sight – or safe.
