OUR vulnerable friends and neighbours are at risk.

We have seen a spate of bogus official crimes in Huddersfield in recent days and people need to be aware of the dangers.

Bogus workmen, tricksters and conmen have one thing in common; they prey on the elderly and the vulnerable.

They will use any methods they can to get into a victim’s home and steal whatever they can.

In the past two weeks we have seen two examples of conmen posing as Yorkshire Water workers tricking their way into homes in Bradley.

In both cases they distracted the occupants enough to steal from them.

We have also had an incident where a man posing as a salesman for a cavity wall insulation company tricked his way into a Huddersfield house to steal.

Other tricks have included posing as council or gas board workers.

There are also examples of people offering to do simple house maintenance or gardening jobs, but they are actually conmen.

The advice is simple; Never trust anyone who comes to your door without checking them out thoroughly.

All the utility companies are more than willing to provide identity checks for their staff.

If you do need household jobs doing then make sure you find a reputable and proper local tradesman who can do the work.

If you have elderly relatives or neighbours, check on them regularly and offer to help out if they are concerned about a caller.
