HAULIERS are taking a hammering across Kirklees!

We have had a real spate of diesel fuel thefts from transport companies all across the area.

And it shows no signs of easing up.

Fuel worth more than £1,000 was stolen from trucks parked up in a yard in Dewsbury on Monday night.

And intruders who broke into a transport yard at Dogley Mills, Penistone Road, Kirkburton, on Sunday night escaped with fuel valued at £600.

These were just two of the latest in a number of thefts across the whole of Kirklees and we need haulage firms and the public to do something about it.

In some cases, the thieves are able to drive into yards without any problems.

Many of the lorries do have anti-siphoning devices fitted to their fuel tanks but the thieves have found a way around these.

They sometimes use bolt-cutters to get into yards and they drive up to the lorries in old vans, filled with drums to take away the fuel.

I would urge all hauliers to have a close look at their security and help us put a stop to this problem.

Diesel fuel is now an expensive commodity and the police know the thieves are finding it a very lucrative business.

All our Neighbourhood Policing Teams have been alerted to the problems and they have been asked to step up patrols in areas where there are haulage companies and depots.

I would urge hauliers to get in touch with the Neighbourhood teams if they have concerns.

And if anyone has any information about the fuel thefts, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

We are concerned that a gun was stolen from a car in Meltham.

The .22 air rifle was taken on Monday and we would urge anyone with information about the theft to contact Crimestoppers.
