A BOGUS window cleaner has been targeting elderly victims in Mirfield and Dewsbury.

Police are warning residents to be on their guard after several reports of conmen operating in the area.

The man called at a number of houses on Dunbottle Lane last Monday, June 7, claiming to be a window cleaner collecting cash.

He persuaded one elderly woman to let him into her house before stealing £60.

Police said all those targeted were elderly women.

Pc Lyndsey Nelson, of Kirklees CID, said: “It is a sad fact of life that opportunist thieves will target the most vulnerable members of our community and it is those people we would ask to be especially vigilant.

“Don’t let anyone into your property that you are not expecting .

“If you are at all unsure, ask them to go away and to make an appointment by letter if you are interested in their services.”

She said people should be suspicious of anyone claiming to be from the council or utility companies.

“It is rare that genuine representatives will call round unannounced,” she added.

“Always check the identification card and if you are still unsure then ring the company.

“Any legitimate employee would be happy to wait while their credentials are checked.”

The conman was white, in his 30s, about 5ft 4ins tall, with short, dark curly hair and was wearing trousers and a jacket.

Anyone with any information should contact Pc Nelson via 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.
