A TOP councillor has challenged the Post Office to prove its consultation is not a sham.

Tory Clr Andrew Palfreeman laid down the challenge after closure plans for Huddersfield and the valleys were announced on Tuesday.

The Post Office earlier announced plans to close 10 branches in north Kirklees.

Savile Town was removed from the hit list following complaints – but Thornhill Edge was added instead.

Clr Palfreeman said: “The north Kirklees experience was very disappointing. We managed to save one branch from closure but then the Post Office cynically replaced it with one which had never been on its list.

“I hope that this time the Post Office will properly consider the views of local people and not leave us suspecting that the consultation is a sham.”

Clr Palfreeman Cabinet member for governance, added: “We will use the period to work with local people and councillors to put forward a case to justify saving services.”
