HUDDERSFIELD area pupils are being encouraged to enter two contests.

The first - aimed at pupils aged between of 10 and 13 - is the Parliamentary Press Gallery Writing Competition.

Last year, there were more than 400 entries and the winners spent a day in Parliament and met Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The second contest is the National Youth Parliament Competition.

This involves making a 20- minute video, with students playing Government officials.

The videos are judged by MPs, with awards at local and national level.

The aim of both contests is to promote awareness of the political process.

Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman has written to all secondary schools in his constituency, encouraging their pupils to enter and offering his support.

He said; "These competitions are a wonderful opportunity for students to learn more about the parliamentary process and to show the talent we have in our area."
