TESCO celebrated the opening of its Mirfield store yesterday by donating £500 to a local good cause.

The company made the donation to the Mirfield Community Partnership which provides and manages community facilities for the town.

The ceremony came after months of protests by Mirfield residents and councillors over the store.

The supermarket company has taken over the former Black Bull pub in the centre of the town.

The protestors have mounted a vociferous campaign to try and halt the development but it was given the go-ahead by planners.

Tesco Express store manager Matt Lawson said: “We are delighted to be able to support the Mirfield Community Partnership as they do such wonderful work for the local community”.
