A BANNED drink driver has appeared in court for driving while disqualified.

Rashid Hussain, 29, was stopped by police during a routine check while driving a Mercedes C220 on Huddersfield Road in Mirfield on July 15.

He immediately admitted to police that he was a disqualified driver and had taken his brother’s vehicle.

Hussain, of Park Square, Heckmondwike, was charged with driving while disqualified, having no insurance and taking the vehicle without the owner’s consent.

He was also found in possession a small quantity of cannabis.

Defending Hussain, Zahid Majeed told the court his client was a recovering alcoholic and had been drinking 40 units of alcohol a day before treatment.

He said: “It was a routine stop. He wasn’t driving dangerously and admitted immediately when stopped he was disqualified.”

Magistrates sentenced Hussain to a 12-month community order with an alcohol requirement and 80 hours unpaid work in the community.

His driving ban was also extended until June 2013.
