CORONATION Street star Nikki Patel helped to put out a raging fire in West Yorkshire.

She was then plucked to safety by firefighters and pulled from a smashed-up car by road traffic collision instructors.

But the stunts were not part of a TV storyline – the actress was helping to promote the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Awards.

Nikki, who plays Amber Kalirai in the ITV soap and went to Whitcliffe Mount School in Cleckheaton, was involved in staged incidents designed to show the range of skills firefighters need.

Nikki said: “The experience was fun and also a real eye-opener as it made me realise that firefighters do a lot more than the job title suggests.

“I think the kind of incidents they have to deal with and the training they go through is greatly underestimated.”

The public can nominate firefighters in eight awards categories on the fire service website at www.westyorksfire.gov.uk or by calling 01274 655807.
