TELEVISION'S biggest soap love rat came to Huddersfield today - to open a revamped supermarket.

Chris Gascoyne - Coronation Street bigamist bookie Peter Barlow - met fans at Kwik Save, Milnsbridge.

Real-life wife, actress Caroline Harding, was alongside Chris as he cut the ribbon at the refurbished store in Scar Lane then signed autographs and chatted with fans.

But Chris, 35, who lives in Manchester, won't be on our screens much longer. He revealed he's taking a break from the part after three years.

Chris says: "I did my last scenes on Friday.

"Peter's big exit, to be shown later this month, involves Manchester Airport.

"We've just filmed it there - firmly behind closed doors."

The actor, who's also starred in Soldier Soldier and The Locksmith, aims to do some theatre work.

But he adds: "Peter may well be back later."

A total of 20 new staff have been taken on at the store.
