PLANS have been tabled for a new drive-thru restaurant on a major route.

Kirklees planners have been asked to approve proposals for a Costa Coffee outlet at the Spindlegate development on the former James Robinson site at Leeds Road, Hillhouse.

The site already has planning permission for a 62-bed hotel and a shop unit. A public house, The Yorkshire Rose, is already operating.

The application was made by Leeds-based ID Planning, representing developer GMI (Robinsons Huddersfield) Ltd.

ID Planning, said the proposal met Kirklees Council’s ambitions by proposing a new use for a brownfield site, providing new amenities, creating jobs and contributing to the local economy.

Costa Coffee already has outlets in Huddersfield at the mall in Kingsgate and the Odeon Cinema by the Galpharm Stadium. it also has sites at Birstall, Halifax and Bradford.

This latest proposal calls for a single-storey stone-built restaurant with 26 car parking spaces.

The James Robinsons dyeworks were demolished in November, 2007, when councillors approved plans for a hotel, shops, offices and restaurants.

Work on the five-and-a-quarter acre Spindlegate site began in early 2008, but came to a halt for more than a year due to the recession.

Construction started up again in March last year.
