FANS of loud music may have to learn to love the sound of silence.

That’s the warning from Kirklees Council after a Highfields woman had her hi-fi seized.

Michelle Blackhouse pleaded guilty at Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court this week to breaching a noise abatement notice three times.

She forfeited her seized hi-fi equipment and was given a 12-month conditional discharge – meaning she will be sentenced for the offence again if she commits a further offence in the next year.

Blackhouse was also ordered to pay £250 to Kirklees Environmental Services for the cost of bringing the case to court.

Clr Martyn Bolt, Kirklees Council’s Cabinet member for the environment, welcomed the sentence.

He said: “This will hopefully prevent the re-occurrence of the noise problem for neighbours and serve as a lesson for other potential offenders who persist in playing their music very loudly.

“Under the Environmental Protection Act a fine of up to £5,000 can be served and equipment can be confiscated, as was the case in this instance.”
