A WINDFALL of up to £15m will come Kirklees Council's way if Leeds-Bradford Airport is sold off.

Town hall bosses agrred to sell their share of the municipally-owned airport if other councils do the same.

Both Leeds and Bradford councils own 40% while Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield together have a 20% stake.

Consultants Ernst and Young have advised there would be "significant appetite" in the market if the airport was put up for sale.

One estimate has put its worth at £36m, but others say it could fetch up to £100m.

Kirklees Council Cabinet member Clr David Hall said: "In order to expand, the airport is looking for a lot of capital investment.

"Councils have come to the conclusion that they cannot provide this and it would be much better to sell the shares."

Leeds and Calderdale councils have already agreed to sell all their shares.

Wakefield has reached a decision but refused to make it public, while Bradford is meeting later today.

Ernst and Young recommend a February deadline for bids.

A total of 2.6 million passengers pass through the airport a year with figures expected to nearly double in the next 10 years.
