LEGAL action is being taken by Kirklees Council to make travellers move from a Huddersfield car park.

Around eight or nine caravans have camped on a small car park at the Leeds Road Playing Fields, off Leeds Road at Deighton.

It is thought they moved on to the site at the weekend after leaving a Town Avenue site and the nearby B&Q car park last week.

Some of the travellers have been riding motorcycles and quad bikes on the fields at the site.

A spokeswoman for Kirklees Council said proceedings had started to move them on. A possession order for the land will be applied for from Huddersfield magistrates today.

In recent weeks travellers have camped at other sites including Newsome Road and Leeds Road and there have also been concerns about the costs of cleaning up after the travellers.

Council workers have spent many hours clearing rubbish and building debris from previous sites occupied by the travellers and some councillors have called for action to prevent the council footing the bill.
