COUNCIL house tenants are facing a rent rise in April.

Kirklees Council will decide this week on a plan to put up rent by 1% in 2010/11.

Average weekly rent would rise by 63p to £61.40 if the plan is approved by the council’s Cabinet tomorrow.

The 1% increase has been proposed by central government as part of its long-term aim to bring council house rents up to the level of private rented property.

However, all other council house charges in Kirklees – including garage rent, parking spaces and communal cleaning – would be frozen at their 2009/10 levels.

The Cabinet will also decide on the council housing budget for the next three years at the meeting at Huddersfield Town Hall.

Maintenance and management costs would rise slightly from £60m this year to £62m in 2012/13.

Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH), which runs council homes in the district, has drawn up the three-year spending plan.

It includes £65,000 a year for a scheme to redistribute household items left in empty homes to vulnerable tenants. KNH hopes the plan will help 1,500 people avoid going to loan sharks.

KNH also wants to spend £175,000 from 2010 to 2013 on a programme to help tenants in Huddersfield area find work.
