KIRKLEES Council is leading the fight against racism in sport.

The Commission for Race Equality (CRE) this week congratulated the council on being the first local authority to achieve intermediate level for promoting diversity through sport.

The council's sports development officer Jim Beattie said: "Ethnic minority communities participate less in sport and are poorly represented at decision-making levels.

"But we are now more aware of these problems and are working on ways to deal with them."

The council was one of six to be given preliminary level status by the CRE two years ago, and is the first to be promoted to intermediate.

Cabinet member for regeneration Ken Sims said: "Congratulations to Jim and his team for all the hard work in achieving this outstanding result.

"We are proud to be the first local authority to achieve this standard."
