Council offices in Lindley are to be knocked down to make way for new homes.
A demolition notice has been issued to pull down Eastlawns on Thomas Street.
Developer Gripfast was given planning permission in July 2012 for 12 new homes at the site.
They say the existing building is now deemed unsafe due to vandalism. Demolition is expected to take place between October 8 and 22.
At one point Kirklees Council had proposed to build a �1.5m housing scheme which would have been managed by Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing on the site, but the idea was shelved in March 2011.
