YOUNG skateboarders in Meltham could be given their own purpose-built skateboard park.

Plans have been put forward by Meltham Town Council for a skate park in Meltham Town Park.

Young people have been involved in discussions about the proposed facility and a working group has been set up by the council with skateboarders and their parents.

The plan is to build it next to the car park. It would feature a half pipe, quarter pipe, jump box, flat ramp and grind block and measure 25 metres by 13 metres.

Council clerk Pat Radford said that the proposed park would cost around £60,000 and would be paid for by the parish council with proceeds from the sale of Meltham Hall.

She said: "It seems quite a popular pastime, but at the mom- ent the young people use pavements and walls and other areas they perhaps should not be in.

"We have been in consultation with parents and skateboarders for quite a long time and have now put in a planning application while we look at costings now."

The skateboard park, in a conservation area, would not be fenced in. Background lighting is planned.
