COUNCILLORS will decide soon whether to ask private companies for help improving cemeteries and crematoria.

Some £10m is needed to update council-run facilities.

The crematoria in Huddersfield and Dewsbury, which deal with hundreds of funerals each year, are in need of extensive work.

Kirklees is also responsible for cemeteries such as Lockwood, Almondbury and Slaithwaite which need to be modernised.

Clr Martyn Bolt, the Cabinet member responsible, said a decision on private funding would be made soon.

He said: “A report will come to Cabinet for decision, hopefully next month.

“No decision has been made yet, we haven’t opted for a public private partnership. It’s up in the air.”
