COUNCIL tax discounts for people who own second homes and empty properties are to be scrapped in Kirklees.

The decision to apply new legislation has been made in a bid to encourage homeowners to bring empty properties back into use.

From next month a full council charge will be due on properties left empty and unfurnished for six months.

Vacant homes in need of major structural repair will be exempt for 12 months before full council tax is charged.

If the property is empty but furnished it is entitled to a 10% discount.

Clr Gordon Beever, council Cabinet member for finance and legal services, said: "There is a shortage of affordable homes in Kirklees area and we are keen to encourage as many properties to be maintained and occupied as is possible.

"The removal of discounts for those people who own empty properties should help ensure that more properties become available for sale and rent."

Council tax bills for the new financial year will be issued soon and will take account of the changes in the discount rules.

Anyone wanting to claim a discount should contact the council on 01484 414900 or by e-mail at council.tax@ kirklees.gov.uk
