POLICE are warning residents to be on the look out for a possible scam operating in Calderdale.
Some householders have received letters from a company claiming to operate in the Bradford area.
The letter asks for address details and signatures and claims to provide a service to submit applications to the Valuation Office Agency which deals with council tax valuations.
Sgt Chris Norbury, from the Upper Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “If you receive something like this through the post which you weren’t expecting then be on your guard. If you are suspicious then simply ignore it.”
Tim Eden, director of council tax at the Valuation Office Agency, said: “We have become aware of a number of scams against council tax payers in recent months. People are being promised a council tax rebate claiming that their property was in the wrong band.
“If anyone has reason to believe their council tax band is wrong, they should contact the VOA directly where we will deal with their inquiries.
“This service is free. People should be careful if asked for an up-front fee by anyone, as this could end up being a scam.”
