A LEADING Huddersfield councillor has been arrested over an alleged assault.

Mohammad Sarwar, a Liberal Democrat councillor on Kirklees Council, was detained by police in Dewsbury.

He was arrested after attending a Kirklees Council meeting at Dewsbury Sports Centre.

Police have bailed Clr Sarwar until September 1, pending further inquiries.

They are investigating an incident in Lockwood on July 4 in which a woman was injured.

A police spokesman said: "A 44-year-old man from Lockwood has been arrested on suspicion of assault and has been released on police bail.

"The assault victim, who was involved in an incident in Victoria Road, Lockwood, on July 4, is a 39-year-old woman."

Clr Sarwar, of North Street, Lockwood, has been a councillor since May, 1999.

He was elected to the Crosland Moor ward with a majority of 138 over the former Labour councillor, Graham Sykes.

He owns the AZ International Food Store in Victoria Road.
