A CONTROVERSIAL takeaway plan has been given the green light despite a public protest.

More than 150 people signed a petition against a proposal to convert Fine Bakers and Sweet Centre on Blacker Road in Huddersfield into a hot food takeaway.

The shop, which is within the residential Birkby Conservation Area, is currently used as a bakery.

The objectors said the takeaway plan would threaten road safety and would harm the environment.

But councillors on Kirklees planning sub-committee yesterday gave applicant Mansur Ul-Aziz the thumbs up to go ahead with the work.

There are currently seven hot food takeaways in the Birkby retail zone.

Councillors were told that fast food outlets made up less than a third of the retail mix, below the council’s threshold allowed in a retail area and that the highways and environmental concerns were not significant enough to block the proposal.

But planning chiefs did ban the applicant from installing an aluminium shop front, saying it was an unsuitable look in a conservation area.
