More on New Mill ‘nightmare’
I CAN’T help but wonder what is going on with our local Kirklees councillors.
We see stories about ‘Road nightmare’ and looming traffic chaos in New Mill, as forecast by our concerned local councillors. And yet further on we are told that the housing scheme at the former Moorbrook Mills, which is expected to cause this chaos, was passed by COUNCILLORS last October.
Now I can see that they would be justified in complaining had these plans been passed by planning officers – but they were passed by councillors!
Š Didn’t they know then that it might result in an increase in traffic?
Clr Donald Firth tells us that he is worried about the inadequacy of the drains. Wasn’t he worried about them last October?
And weren’t these same councillors involved in the roadworks recently carried out in the middle of New Mill, very close to where this development is taking place?Š
This junction is no safer now than it was, but extra traffic isn’t going to help the confusion and congestion that is still there.
Aren’t these the same councillors who can’t agree among themselves over whether and where we should have a crossing on New Mill Road – near the entrance to the recreation ground or near the Sycamore?
Isn’t it more important first to make sure that any crossing that might be installed is safe to use, in view of the fact that the average speed of cars on that road is known to be 38mph?
It’s worth remembering that we have a Tory administration in Kirklees, so our Tory councillors can’t blame Kirklees any more and they certainly can’t blame the Government for this fiasco.
They seem to be as accident-prone as their leader and the national Tory party!
