Councillors will decide if Holmfirth should get a new bookies.

William Hill wants a licence for a former restaurant to become a bookmakers.

They want to open a branch at 11 Victoria Street, Holmfirth, to be open daily from 8am to 10pm with two full-time and three part-time workers.

But Clr Nigel Patrick, Holme Valley South Conservative, has lodged his opposition to the proposal.

He said: “I have concerns about a betting office on Victoria Street in the heart of Holmfirth town centre.

It is the wrong place for a betting office and it will harm the image of the town.

“The town already has one betting office, out of the way on Hollowgate. The polls that have been undertaken suggest that most people do not want a betting office in Victoria Street.

“The opinion of the public who attended an Area Committee meeting in Holmfirth was against a betting office at 11 Victoria Street with preference for a different location in the town, away from the main street in the centre of town.

“I feel I ought to appeal to the applicants and ask them to look at other locations away from the main street.”

William Hill want the bookies to have a 13 Screen gantry providing pictures and information for horse and greyhound racing and sporting events.

Also proposed are four fixed odds betting terminals.

Councillors on the Licensing Panel will decide the application at Huddersfield Town Hall from 11.15am this Thursday.
