THE family of missing child Shannon Matthews received words of support from councillors last night.

Police and volunteers are searching for the nine-year-old Dewsbury girl, who disappeared more than a week ago.

Kirklees Mayor Clr Jean Calvert passed on her best wishes to Shannon’s loved ones.

She said: “I would like to send a message of support to the family and friends of the missing child.”

Clr Calvert, who was speaking at Kirklees Council’s annual budget meeting last night, added her thanks to those who are searching for Shannon.

She said: “I express my appreciation to Chief Supt Barry South and his officers for their unflagging work, and to the community and our council staff who are doing their best to help.”

Council leader Clr Robert Light echoed the mayor’s sentiments.

He said: “Our thoughts go out to the family of Shannon Matthews and we hope for her safe return.”
