FOUR lucky Kirklees residents won’t be struggling to pay fuel bills after winning £300 in a Warm Zone competition.

It is part of a council-backed scheme encouraging residents to become more energy-efficient.

The winners can choose to have a £300 reduction in their Council Tax bill or have £300 in vouchers for an energy efficient appliance.

Clr David Hall, Cabinet member for green services, said: “With fuel bills on the rise, Warm Zone is a great opportunity for people to have their homes properly insulated, helping them to reduce energy bills and their carbon footprint. This opportunity is unique to Kirklees – no other area has such a comprehensive free insulation scheme.”

Warm Zone is aiming to provide every suitable home in Kirklees with free loft and cavity wall insulation, regardless of household income.

Launched in 2007, officers are aiming to visit every household by appointment over the next three years. As well as providing free insulation, residents can get fire safety checks and free carbon monoxide detectors.

Anyone who completes an assessment is automatically entered into a prize draw, with the most recent winners being given £300 in support.

Winner Christopher McGarth, of Netherton, said: “Since Warm Zone insulated my home, my boiler hardly needs to come on and I use the money I save for nicer things.”
