SERVICES to protect vulnerable children in Kirklees have been praised in a snap Ofsted report.

The Government inspectorate for schools and children’s services made an unannounced inspection of Kirklees Children’s Services last month.

The reviews, which assesses how councils handle referrals of vulnerable children, were established in the wake of the Baby Peter case in Haringey.

Kirklees Council was praised for its support, supervision and training of staff.

Other strengths lauded by the report included the council’s handling of serious case reviews, communication between teams and its responses to domestic abuse.

The council is the first in Yorkshire to receive a report which has not identified areas in need of urgent action.

Alison O’Sullivan, Director of Kirklees Children and Young People Service, said: “I am delighted that inspectors recognised our strengths in major areas like staff development and training, working and communicating with other agencies and engaging with families.

“In accepting the areas for development, we note that a number of them are also referred to as strengths in other sections of the report. In general we have recognised these areas for improvement ourselves and have action plans in place to deal with them.”
