TOWN hall chiefs have launched a new phone service to make it easier for people to settle bills to Kirklees Council.

The automated service allows users to pay by debit or credit card any time day and night.

Bills that can be paid include council tax, Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing rents, general invoices, business rates and housing benefit overpayments.

The service will be extended to include other bills later.

Callers need to have the bill account number, their payment card and a pen and paper to record the payment reference.

Clr Paul Battye, the council's cabinet member responsible for administration and business said: "Although it is automated, we have been careful to make sure that the system isn't complicated for people to use. The system will now give people a choice"

The number is 01484 414818.
