A HUDDERSFIELD student is proving to be a whizz at maths.

Patrick Milner, 14, who goes to All Saints' High School, Bradley Bar, has won a gold award in the UK Intermediate Mathematics Challenge and was identified as being in the country's top 1%.

As a result, he was invited to take part in a European Challenge across 25 other countries.

He sat the exam at school - and his result put him in the top half of these elite mathematicians.

The school's head of maths, Martin Farran, said: "We like to support the challenges, but it is the first time we have had an International Mathematician.

"We have many capable students at All Saints and we are always willing to accelerate their achievements."

He added: "As a school we enter students early for external exams if they show exceptional talent. We are keen to see the students' individual potential at all times.

"We are very proud of Patrick's outstanding achievement."

Patrick, from Hipperholme, was joined by seven other Year 9 and 10 pupils.

A gold award was also presented to James O'Toole and silver went to Brendan Sykes.

Bronze were awarded to Sammy Li, Katie Doratiak, Michael Maxwell, Ryan Lach and Anthony McMannamin.

Special praise went to Sammy and Brendan, who are in Year 9 and were competing against students in Years 10 and 11.
