HOMEOWNERS want to enjoy a bit of the countryside without leaving towns and cities, says a new survey.

People in West Yorkshire want their streets to be tree-lined, with parks nearby, and want their homes to have gardens.

The survey, conducted by mortgage company The One, also showed most people wanted to escape to the country rather than live in a luxury flat in the city centre.

Property expert Phil Spencer, of Channel 4 TV show Location, Location, Location, said he was not surprised by the findings.

"While many people in West Yorkshire are quitting the big cities for a taste of the country this report reveals that hardened townies are looking for other ways to find their rural idyll," he said. "Buyers are far more attracted by green spaces and a garden than trendy coffee shops and wine bars."

The report also showed more than half of the people in West Yorkshire would prefer to live in a village.

And a third of estate agents admitted they had wrongly called an area a village to give it more rustic charm.
